The Sixfold Strength of Planets in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, assessing a planet’s placement solely by its zodiac sign or house is only scratching the surface. A planet might sit in an exalted sign yet lack the functional vigor to produce tangible results, or appear in an enemy sign yet deliver outstanding outcomes. To evaluate the true, multidimensional potency of a planet, classical Jyotish employs Shadbala (Shad meaning "six", Bala meaning "strength").

Codified by Maharishi Parashara in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Shadbala quantifies the strength of the seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn; Rahu and Ketu are excluded) across six distinct criteria. It is traditionally measured in Rupas or Virupas (where 1 Rupa = 60 Virupas).

1. Sthana Bala (Positional Strength)

Sthana Bala measures the inherent power a planet derives from its spatial location in the zodiac and its divisional charts. It comprises five sub-balas:

• Uchha Bala (Exaltation Strength): Measures how close a planet is to its highest exaltation point (paramochha). A planet at its exact degree of exaltation receives the maximum value of 60 Virupas, decreasing linearly to 0 at its deep debilitation point (paramanicha).
  
  
• Saptavargaja Bala (Divisional Dignity Strength): Assesses a planet's dignity across seven primary divisional charts (Saptavargas: Rashi, Hora, Drekkana, Saptamsha, Navamsha, Dwadamsha, and Trishamsha). Dignity points are assigned depending on whether the planet occupies an exalted, moolatrikona, own, friendly, neutral, or inimical sign.
  
  
• Ojayugmarasyamsa Bala (Odd/Even Sign Strength): Points earned based on planetary gender affinity. Male planets (Sun, Mars, Jupiter) gain strength in odd signs and odd Navamshas, while female planets (Moon, Venus) gain strength in even signs and even Navamshas. Mercury and Saturn earn points depending on specific chart balances.
  
  
• Kendra Bala (Angular House Strength): Planets located in Kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) receive full strength (60 Virupas), Panapharas (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) receive half strength (30 Virupas), and Apoklimas (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) receive quarter strength (15 Virupas).
  
  
• Drekana Bala (Decanate Strength): Planets gain strength according to which decanate (10° division) of a sign they occupy relative to their gender:
  
  
  • Male planets gain strength in the 1st Drekkana.
    
    
  • Neutral planets (Mercury, Saturn) gain strength in the 2nd Drekkana.
    
    
  • Female planets gain strength in the 3rd Drekkana.
    
    

2. Dig Bala (Directional Strength)

Dig Bala evaluates the strength a planet attains by being positioned in its most favorable cardinal direction:

• East (1st House / Ascendant): Jupiter and Mercury attain directional strength here, empowering intellect, wisdom, and personality.
  
  
• North (4th House / Nadir): Moon and Venus thrive here, boosting emotional peace, comforts, and domestic happiness.
  
  
• West (7th House / Descendant): Saturn achieves maximum directional strength here, governing endurance, partnerships, and practical duties.
  
  
• South (10th House / Midheaven): Sun and Mars peak here, driving status, ambition, leadership, and public career.
  
  

A planet located at its peak house cusp receives 60 Virupas; as it moves toward the opposite house, this strength tapers down to zero.

3. Kala Bala (Temporal Strength)

Kala Bala measures how planetary energy fluctuates according to the cycles of time—day, night, lunar phases, seasons, and astrological epochs. It contains nine sub-balas:

• Nathonnatha Bala (Diurnal/Nocturnal Strength): Distinguishes between day and night. Sun, Jupiter, and Venus are naturally stronger during the day, whereas Moon, Mars, and Saturn peak at night. Mercury remains strong around the clock.
  
  
• Paksha Bala (Lunar Phase Strength): Derived from the bright (Shukla) and dark (Krishna) fortnights. Benefics (Moon, Venus, Jupiter, well-associated Mercury) gain maximum strength during the Full Moon, while natural malefics (Sun, Mars, Saturn) gain strength during the New Moon.
  
  
• Tribhaga Bala (Three-Part Day/Night Strength): Divides day and night each into three equal portions:
  
  
  • Day: 1st part ruled by Mercury, 2nd by Sun, 3rd by Saturn.
    
    
  • Night: 1st part ruled by Moon, 2nd by Venus, 3rd by Mars. (Jupiter receives points constantly).
    
    
• Varsha Bala (Year Lord Strength): Awarded to the planet that rules the first day of the astrological solar year.
  
  
• Masa Bala (Month Lord Strength): Awarded to the planet ruling the first day of the solar month.
  
  
• Vara Bala (Day Lord Strength): Awarded to the lord of the weekday of birth (e.g., Mars for Tuesday).
  
  
• Hora Bala (Hour Lord Strength): Awarded to the ruler of the specific planetary hour (Hora) active at the moment of birth.
  
  
• Ayana Bala (Solstitial Strength): Calculated based on the planet's declination (Kranti) North or South of the celestial equator. Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus gain strength with northern declination; Moon and Saturn gain strength with southern declination.
  
  
• Yuddha Bala (Planetary War Strength): When two planets (excluding Sun and Moon) occupy the same degree within one degree of orb, they enter Graha Yuddha (planetary war). The victor absorbs strength from the defeated planet.
  
  

4. Cheshta Bala (Motional Strength)

Cheshta Bala assesses the speed and motion of a planet relative to the Earth:

• Vakri (Retrograde): Produces peak Cheshta Bala (60 Virupas). A retrograde planet is closest to Earth and casts a heightened psychological and karmic influence.
  
  
• Anuvakra (Direct after Retrograde): Carries significant strength (approx. 30 Virupas).
  
  
• Vikala (Stationary): Highly focused, intense energy (approx. 15 Virupas).
  
  
• Mandatara / Manda (Slow motion): Moderate strength.
  
  
• Sama / Chara / Atichara (Normal, Rapid, and Accelerated direct motion): Assigned proportional minimum Virupas.
  
  

(Note: For the Sun and Moon, who never turn retrograde, Cheshta Bala is computed alternatively using Ayana Bala for the Sun and Paksha Bala for the Moon).

5. Naisargika Bala (Natural Inherent Strength)

Unlike other components that vary from chart to chart, Naisargika Bala is fixed and permanent for every horoscope. It reflects the inherent luminosity and natural cosmic potency of each body in descending order:

6. Drik Bala (Aspectual Strength)

Drik Bala represents the influence of aspects (Drishti) cast by other planets onto the planet in question:

• Subha Drishti (Benefic Aspects): Aspects received from natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, unafflicted Mercury, waxing Moon) add positive Virupas.
  
  
• Asubha Drishti (Malefic Aspects): Aspects received from natural malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, afflicted Mercury, waning Moon) subtract Virupas.
  
  

The net score can be positive or negative, reflecting whether a planet operates in a supportive environment or under constant friction.
